Connecting Through Social Media

Confession time: I'm not a social media person. I check my facebook page periodically, but mostly to post birthday messages to my friends. But since the majority of young people have Instagram accounts, I decided to try a new way to showcase library books, contests, and anything library related that might actually interest students. I posted some pics of students in the library, but I thought videos would be more interactive, so I asked one of my amazing students to come after school to film me giving short book talks (you want to keep videos under 1 minute or Instagram requires users to press "continue watching," which no one ever does. ) I quickly realized that students would get bored just hearing me, so I invited other students to come after school to talk about new library books they've read. Once I had what I thought was a respectable amount of posts, I advertised my Instagram page and bribed students with a baby Yoda bookmark for following me. My next move is to survey students on ideas for what I can post that would generate interest among students. Not sure where all this is going, but I'm hopeful that this social media app will be an effective way to reach out to students, their parents, and even the community. Do you have any good ideas for me? I'd love to hear them!
